Martin's Farmstand:  Winter Work

Hello,
We have printed another edition of the Bugle which is a little magazine that my family puts out. Besides the print edition, it is also online at
www.thebugle.martins4u.com
We hope you enjoy it.

On the farm each season has its natural work and harvests. Traditionally farmers gave attention to their woodlots in the winter. I have been working at thinning my sugarbush so the trees get more light and grow nice and healthy. This has resulted in a huge pile of firewood and logs. If anybody needs hardwood lumber contact Luray 268-0309 we have a lot for sale at reasonable prices. Have you ever wondered if it makes much differance if you thin carrots in the garden or trees in your woodlot. The answer is that it does. The garden vegetables such as carrots and lettuce get much bigger. Look at the differance if a bed only gets half done and then not finished for a few weeks. Weed control is also important for this reason. Over at my Dads farm we thinned part a hill we call “Stone Hill” 25 years ago. It had a dense stand of young pole sized maple. It was 15 years before we returned to finish the rest. The trees that were thinned on time are twice a big as the trees on the other section.

So much of life is like this. Sometimes God removes things that we love and it appears like trouble to us but God is preparing us. We do well to love God and relax in such events. God is good. Daniel

Message from Your Market Manager

COMING SOON
Next Market we will have a variety of pork sausages and bacon produced by a USDA inspected facility in Sarasota. Grower Jim Kuntzelman of Sunset Ranch in Dover who raises pastured hogs has been pursuing this opportunity for quite awhile and I am excited that our Market is going to benefit from his success at making it happen. More details next week.

Was hoping to surprise you with Hawaiian ginger and those lovely domestic Covington Yams that we sold for the Thanksgiving Holiday. But neither were delivered as expected. Our regrets and a promise to try again next time!

THIS WEEK’S FRUIT
Strawberries, sour oranges (aka calamondins), honeybells, limequats, tangerines, papayas (both green & ripe), galas, Medjool dates, and bosc pears.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.
