Augusta Locally Grown:  THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!N

For us at Augusta Locally Grown, February is a month of pure, unrefined planning. Those farm tours, workshops, educational programs, farmers markets and special events — they all take months to pull together. They also require a relentless army of dedicated, talented and sleep-deprived volunteers, community partners and interns. We are more than blessed with some of the BEST in the CSRA.

While the thanksgiving season may be behind us, we ARE in the throws of the month of LOVE. So here’s a candy-apple-red Valentine hug to all our volunteers, community partners and interns. You make my day, every day, ever so much more rewarding and delicious.

Here’s what’s coming up!

THU, FEB 12 VEGGIE FERMENTATION WORKSHOP
Fermdamental’s Danielle Shelton will join us on Thursday evening, February 12, to teach a Vegetable Fermentation workshop. This is a hands-on event, and everyone will take home a jar or two of sauer kraut. Of course, sampling different kinds of veggie ferments is all part of the fun. Participants will also receive handouts with a few different fermentation recipes. One jar of kraut is included in the price for the class; additional jars (if there are any) will be an additional $5 per jar. The workshop will take place from 5:30 -7:00 pm, at the GROW Harrisburg Local Foods Classroom (1808 Broad Street) Augusta, across from the Kroc Center. Tickets are available through this on-line market, or email kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

TUES, FEB 17 – EHS STEPS INTO WELLNESS: HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIRALG will host a seasonal foods education booth at Evans High School for CCBOE employees. We’d love a volunteer or two to help, especially to promote the Evans Towne Farmers Market. We’ve filled all our volunteer slots! Thank you!!!

MON, FEB 23- APARTMENT AQUAPONICS WORKSHOP … Join David Young for another hands-on aquaponics workshop, this one tailored for urban gardens on a very tight budget and with very small spaces! The workshop is 5:30pm-7pm. For just $5, everyone goes home with a small fish farm for herbs. Held at the GROW Harrisburg Local Foods Classroom, 1808 Broad Street, Augusta. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to enroll.

SAT, MAR 14 – FARM TOUR & WORKSHOP AT ADDERSON’S FRESH PRODUCE … One of the CSRA’s most beloved organic veggie farms is planning an educational farm tour and workshop in mid-March, and Augusta Locally Grown will be helping! Email Loretta Adderson for purchase details: lorettaadderson@yahoo.com.

TUE, MAR 17 – OPENING DAY AT THE VEGGIE TRUCK FARMERS MARKET … “Dark Leafy Green St. Patty’s Market Party” is what we’re calling our opening day festivities this season. We’ll be doubling SNAP/EBT again this year. The market is in Harrisburg, across from the Kroc Center, every Tuesday, 4:30pm-7pm, through October. Volunteer cooking demo instructors are always needed!

WED-THUR, MAR 18-19 – THE GEORGIA DIETETICS CONFERENCE will be held in Augusta this year. ALG will provide an educational booth on local foods. Volunteers will be needed on both days! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help.

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  The on-line market is open for ordering.

Good morning sunshine! By all reports it is shaping up to be a beautiful weekend. After the Fermented vegetable class on Saturday, I hope to play in the dirt a little in anticipation of spring planting.
Our March class will be Fermented Beverages, we will be learning about milk and water kefir, kombucha, yogurt and Piima making. These are wonderful beverages to include in your daily diet to restore healthy flora to the gut. If you are eating processed foods, and who isn’t to some degree, you need to consume the probiotics fermented foods provide.
Our wonderful farmers and artisans are bringing you the highest quality foods around so have fun shopping, try something new and see you Wednesday.
Blessings,
Mary Beth

Republican Valley Produce:  The market is OPEN

Seed orders are coming in and with the expected upswing in temperatures, it sounds and feels like spring will be on its way very soon. We will be planting carrots this weekend and starting tomato seeds inside. I am hopeful for a good growing season.

We are looking at trying a few new crops this year and continuing many of the old favorites.

Some new crops will include:
-Lunchbox peppers
-Parsnips (maybe this will be the year!)
-Celeriac root (new to me)
-Rutabegas ( 3rd year will be a charm)
-Increasing our onion plantings
-Some new melon varieties
-A few new tomato varieties

Just a few things you may see in the months to come.

Orders are due by Saturday at 10pm. Deliveries will be Tuesday.

Thanks,

Jay
